Today, the Moon glides into Rohini, widely celebrated as the Moon’s most beloved among his 27 wives (the Nakshatras). Lord Brahma created the 27 Nakshatras as daughters of King Daksha. When all 27 married Chandra (the Moon God), Daksha made Chandra promise to love and spend equal time with every single wife. Intoxicated by Rohini’s unparalleled grace, charm, and radiance, Chandra ignored his vow. He spent almost all his time in Rohini’s palace, leaving the other 26 sisters neglected and sorrowful. Eventually Daksha cursed him to waste away. O boy! The Moon began shrinking. His light and strength gradually disappeared. Chandra finally sought refuge in Lord Shiva, and through Shiva's grace the curse was modified and Lord Shiva put Him on his forehead and hence, the crescent Moon. But the Moon would diminish…and then grow again. Waxing and waning. Decline and renewal. Loss and creation. So what does Rohini mean for us today?Rohini is connected with growth, fertility, beauty, nourishment, agriculture and creation. Its deity is Prajapati — the creator. So today, create something.
